Mindful Employee: A comparison between Middle-earth and your organization

Five years ago, the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (the Standard) was released. Haven’t read it yet? Not to fret. Some organizations are just beginning their journey towards psychological health and safety. And that’s exactly what it is, a journey. One that involves many, because if we learned anything from Frodo’s quest to destroy the “One Ring”, it’s that the job is made easier with the help and wisdom of many. Yes, I just made a Lord of the Rings (LOTR) reference.

Let’s stick with that theme. Just like there are many different types of groups involved in saving Middle-earth (elves, men, hobbits, dwarves, etc.), there are many different types of organizations who all have different values and priorities on their journey to protect the psychological health of their staff. The important piece to remember, is that sometimes it takes the involvement and engagement of all groups to succeed.

This is where the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s (MHCC) new tool Being a Mindful Employee: An Orientation to Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace comes in. This FREE, online training tool is hosted by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) with content adapted from yours truly, Mindful Employer Canada.

It allows all employees to become better educated on:

  • What the Standard is
  • The 13 psychosocial factors that effect psychological health and safety in the workplace
  • What those factors can look like in a workplace
  • A scenario quiz for each factor
  • A final test and certificate of completion if you pass

This tool is something that can be introduced during orientation, on-boarding, or as a part of your staff’s continued learning to help them understand the role they play in upholding psychological health and safety within your organization.

Maybe if Smeagol had a similar kind of knowledge and information about how detrimental the “One Ring” was, he could have prevented his eventual transition into becoming Gollum! Last LOTR reference, I swear.

Do yourself, and your staff a favour by leveraging this FREE and exceptional tool and creating an organization that protects the mental health of its staff.
